Esalen® Massage is a healing art form, evolved over 45 years at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California. Influenced by the rhythms of the Pacific Ocean, this form of touch engages all the senses and offers deep connectedness and relaxation to both giver and receiver. This workshop invites participants to explore the world of Essential Touch, incorporating the basic principles of a good massage: grounding & centering, moving from the core, quality of touch, and using breath to bridge the connection between giver and receiver.
One of the key elements of this art form is to access one's vital essence, then tap into the flowing, creative energy present in a living body and let one's massage rhythm emerge from that experience. We will include technique, especially the Esalen signature moves, along with deeper work, as participants are ready.
In addition to the primary goals of learning to touch essence and move energy, gaining knowledge of anatomy and physiology greatly enhances students' understanding of how bodies change when touched, and why slow, flowing work is one of our most effective tools in releasing pain and restoring vitality.
This is an introductory class, and yet it is designed for all levels of massage experience. The novice will gain a sense of what it is like to give a flowing Esalen® Massage, grounded in the awareness of one's own body. The experienced practitioner will discover how to break from routine and work from deeper, more essentially guided principles of healing and touch.
Ellen believes that the path to becoming a skilled bodyworker includes developing a personal movement practice. Each session will begin with a movement session to give us new, creative, and sometimes playful ways to dance with and on the body.
Ellen Watson is celebrating her 25th year on staff at Esalen Institute, where she studies, practices and teaches various modalities of moving meditation practice.
